Jigsaw *****
Jigsaw plunged the audience into a rapid sequence of sketches, consistent only by their brilliance, swift pace and display of the macabre.
The show did not suffer from this lack of story line; in fact the series of unrelated sketches were credit to Antopolski, Craine and Luurtsema, not simply as comics, but as actors through the strength of their characterisations.
Jigsaw’s quality showed most in its writing however. Sketches such as a candle maker’s interest in babies epitomized the show’s ability to present the macabre, not simply as a tool for shock, rather to drag the comedy into more interesting, darker areas.
The trio showed dexterity also, leading us through the mad and the obscene.
Further, their chemistry – particularly that between Antopolski and Craine – proved that there was more connecting them than very pretty faces.
Theirs’ was a performance that showed a trio of equal strength. To be sentimental butterscotch, it was great to see three performers who have gained such acclaim as individuals, to then to produce something of this quality together.
While I found the combination of The Beneath’s oppressive heat and Jigsaw’s sabotaging humour be conducive to suffocation, I am earnest in saying that it would be a death worth having. One of the best sketch shows out.
